Economic growth, modernization and making life easier with a push of a button are also some of the forces thought to trigger the epidemic.
Obesity and overweight is assessed by using the body mass index (BMI). BMI is determined by dividing the weight in kilograms by the square of the height in meters. A BMI of over 25 kg/m2 is considered as overweight. Obesity is 30 kg/m2 or more. A BMA of less than 18.5 kg/m2 falls in the underweight category. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the obesity levels of first world and high income countries including North America and Europe as well as some Latin and Pacific countries are around 25-27 kg/m2.
Obesity is preventable disease but it’s is one of the leading preventable causes of deaths worldwide. This disease increases the risk of many physical and mental conditions. Complications brought by obesity and overweight directly or indirectly are follows:
– Heart disease (ischemic, congestive heart failure, hypertension, abnormal cholesterol levels)
– Diabetes (type 2 diabetes – which is the strongest link to obesity)
– Stroke, migraines, dementia, multiple sclerosis, depression (in women)
– Gout, osteoarthritis, low back pain
– Fatty liver disease
– Cancer (breast, ovarian, liver, pancreatic, gallbladder, prostate, kidney cancers)
– Asthma, obesity hyperventilation syndrome
– Erectile dysfunction, chronic renal failure
These diseases, complications and disorders are just some of conditions than can be brought by obesity. Eating foods that lower cholesterol and are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids such as krill oils, regular exercise and living out a clean life by staying away from smoking and drinking are just some of the steps for a healthy body.
